A new spectrophotometer for measurements in turbid liquids

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - Modu-Spectro (A new spectrophotometer for measurements in turbid liquids)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2021-03-01 al 2022-08-31

The standard and most widely used method for liquid characterization is absorption spectrophotometry. This allows the determination of the composition and concentration of molecules via the process of light absorption.

However, for turbid liquids such as waste water, blood, dirty oils, milk, beer, to cite only a few examples, unwanted so-called multiple light scattering occurs. This introduces large measurement errors or, in the worst case, measurements that are not achievable. Thus, commercial spectrophotometers are incapable of measuring within turbid liquids.

The novel tabletop instrument created during this PoC project, called MODU, is solving all these issues. It is capable of measuring concentrations, color and turbidity of dense liquids at concentration levels where other existing commercial instruments fail. Then, the users produce reliable and accurate results in turbid liquids, shorten the processing time and decrease the operating costs.

To conclude, MODU is a highly innovative opportunity of characterizing turbid liquids which are very important in fields related to Environmental monitoring, Medical analysis, Pharmaceutical testing and Food processing.
