The radio market is changing. The public sector is expanding into the private commercial and the private non-commercial sectors. This means that there is a need forfacilities for introductory and continuing education and uniform qualification standards for radio journalists which go beyond the in-house training programmes of the existing public broadcasting companies.
The aim of the project is to develop training units for the radio sector that can be implemented in two fields: radio journalism and cultural journalism (community relations). The modular training program consistently emphasises the participation ofwomen in training and continuing education at all levels, as well as access to jobs, management, and sensitisation measures for the fair treatment and description of disadvantaged groups.
On the basis of the tried-and-tested training packages of AMARC-Europe, intensive, introductory, and advanced courses will be developed within the framework of the Ether-Train program. In the training units, these courses will emphasise additional subject areas corresponding to the institutional orientation. The courses end with contributions, ready for broadcasting, for reporting, feature, and commentary styles.
Impact
The application of the results of the Ether-Train program in the national and international radio sector will promote the mobility of radio journalists within and outside the sector. The application of new information technologies (World-wide Web, Internet, digital editing techniques) will, in addition, bring new impetus into the action-oriented training methods. Different training standards and certificates will be developed which will correspond to the differences in content and length of the training units with the aim of obtaining international recognition.
