Bilingual software programme to improve elementary reading and writing skills

Objective

For illiterate or unqualified young people and adults, developing the most basic of linguistic skills is essential for taking a training course and joining the labour market. This pilot project will design and produce a CD-ROM to help such people acquire or reactivate basic reading and writing mechanisms. The first objective is to cut down the language barrier that exists between the German-speaking and French-speaking regions. The second objective is to improve the users' communication skills, personal and social skills and their ability to reflect and reason logically.

The CD-ROM will simulate a group visit to an Italian restaurant. Each student in the group will have different characteristics in terms of nationality, behaviour and history. Learners and teachers are free to interrupt the programme at any time to discuss, evaluate, hypothesise and make decisions. Three levels will be offered: beginner, medium and advanced and a series of written exercises will be provided. Learners will also be encouraged to create their own activities, which will stimulate their creativity and give them a boost of self-confidence. This multimedia tool can be used for individual, semi-individual or group work.

Information about the CD-ROM will be distributed, among others, by articles in international education journals and by the Internet.

Impact
DELTA will create a structure capable of offering illiterate young people or adults a second chance at reading and writing.
