In and b-isdn signalling integration on atm platforms

Obiettivo

Using available equipment, the project will research and develop prototypes of Broadband Service Switching Points (B-SSPs), Broadband Service Control Points (B-SCPs) and Broadband Intelligent Peripherals (B-IPs). This equipment will be deployed in the context of different NHs, interconnected and exposed to real users.
By the end of 1996 the Project had achieved:
Precise definition and implementation of interfaces and protocols to allow interworking of equipment coming from various project partners, particularly the Network-Node Interface (NNI) for the establishment of switched connections within a network and the INSIGNIA Broadband Intelligent Network Application Protocol (B-INAP) for the provision of control functionality of powerful multi-party multimedia services.
Realisation of the selected services (Broadband Video Conference, Broadband Video on Demand, Broadband Virtual Private Network) on the INSIGNIA architecture has been defined in detail. Service logic has been implemented on the B-SCP and the B-IP for the three services.
Implementation of network elements B-SSP, B-SCP, B-IP and of end systems has been completed.
Planning of the trials has been completed and a detailed integration and test plan for the first trial has been produced.
Simulation models have been constructed to study the performance of the system developed for the first trial and to provide input for the development of the system for the second trial. Performance measurements have been planned in detail so that the models can be verified. Congestion Control mechanisms have been studied.
Several contributions to ITU-T and many papers accepted on European and international conferences.
Active participation in the High Speed Networking Domain and several contributions to NI and SI chains for the production of guidelines.

Future achievements are expected to include:
Successful trials demonstrating the feasibility of a trans-European ATM network offering IN features.
To verify interoperability using a signalling network for broadband services.
Assessment of the economic viability of the new network services.
Validation of IN services using ATM switched connections.
Expected Impact
INSIGNIA will achieve an integration of IN and B-ISDN concepts through contribution to relevant standardisation bodies.

Main contributions to the programme objectives:
Main deliverables
Provision of a platform for the delivery of multi-media services using integrated IN and B-ISDN / ATM infrastructure
Contribution to the programme
The INSIGNIA project provides the technological basis for setting up switched connections between using an IN-based ATM infrastructure, providing advanced communication services such as broadband virtual private networks and interactive multimedia services
Technical Approach
INSIGNIA takes a phased approach: In the first phase B-SSPs, B-SCPs and B-IPs will be deployed in the context of three NHs in different countries. This will provide an opportunity to verify the interoperability of B-SSP prototypes of different manufacturers in a real network environment. In order to carry out trials with real end users, attractive multimedia application services will be made available which make use of the advanced network services. Data on the acceptability and usage of the services will be collected during the trials, as a basis for the assessment of the economic viability of the new network services.
The second phase will provide the users with ATM switched connections between NHs with network-wide IN services controlled by remote B-SCPs via a signalling network. This is a unique opportunity to validate on the one hand the concept of specialised, remote B-SCPs and on the other hand a signalling network for broadband services. The project will address specifically the issue of overload control for the network elements as well as for the signalling network as a whole.
Summary of Trial
The project will carry out trials in the context of National Hosts (NHs) using the JAMES network. The INSIGNIA trials will interconnect the NHs of Germany, Italy and Spain and will offer ATM-based Intelligent Network (IN) features (Broadband Video Conference, Broadband Video on Demand, Broadband Virtual Private Network) to the users of these NHs.
Key Issues
To define, to implement and to demonstrate an advanced architecture integrating IN and B-ISDN signalling;
to consider user requirements arising from new interactive application services e.g. multimedia conferencing;
to enhance selected National Hosts to support trans-European switched ATM networking;
to define, implement and demonstrate advanced network services in field trials on National Host platforms with real user involvement;
to achieve an integration of IN and B-ISDN concepts through contribution to relevant standardisation bodies.
