Satellite integration into networks for umts services

Obiettivo

- to validate the UMTS segment for different Satellite Air Interfaces and interworking with terrestrial component and B-ISDN.
- to consolidate S-UMTS technology,
- to define reference models for the UMTS satellite component for interworking with the UMTS terrestrial component and B-ISDN,
- to assess the economic and technical feasibility of providing services through the UMTS satellite component,
- to support standardisation activities and make recommendations.
SINUS will build a"Universal" system demonstrator for validation of the system concept and for development of novel application concepts.
- Services and Applications definition for UMTS space segment.
- Description of Services to be implemented in the testbed for trials.
- Standard Interfaces description and Specification for terminal application.
- Definition of Generic upper layer protocols able to manage different radio interfaces.
Expected impact
- The trials will validate the wireless sub-system and network components in a variety of environments (rural, suburban, ...). They will demonstrate cost-effective applications and services, and verify interfaces. The work contributes to development of common specifications and standards, as well as to the identification of new market opportunities.
- This project will result in a major advance in the state-of-the-art for integrated UMTS service provision.
- It will have significant impact not only on the commercial markets of the partners involved but also on the strength of European industry in implementing advanced telecommunication services world-wide.
- The implementation of S-UMTS offers European industry to improve its position in the global market.

Main contributions to the programme objectives:
Main deliverables
Building blocks for the definition of the Satellite component of UMTS and its integration to the terrestrial network (air interface, satellite channel emulator, networking software and control unit)
Contribution to the programme
Definition and development of WB-CDMA based air interface protocols, following closely the terrestrial UMTS air interface. Development of a test bed including an advanced satellite channel emulator for modelling future satellite constellations.
Technical Approach
SINUS will define and demonstrate an end-to-end communications network. This will incorporate a remote user terminal based on existing equipment, satellite and terrestrial channels and an access network connected to a National Host. All elements will be defined including satellite and terrestrial interfaces, and network procedures.
SINUS will emulate a fully representative satellite channel, avoiding the risk of physical satellite non-availability within a suitable time-frame. As no In-Orbit satellite constellation will be available, satellite constraints will be evaluated through adaptive simulation. The SINUS project will implement a laboratory system demonstrator for the satellite component in the trial.
The interface with the National Host will be provided at the satellite and terrestrial sites and the dual-mode terminal will be connected to:
- the satellite segment in which transmission via a single Fixed Earth Station (FES) coverage will be considered (intra-FES hand-over), inter-FES handover within the call duration being very unlikely. As both satellite air interface aspects and networking procedures will be evaluated, the satellite segment will be emulated and divided into terminal, satellite channel emulator and FES including radio resource management.
- the terrestrial segment which will be fully simulated on a workstation since the terrestrial air interface is not expected to be available.
Implementation of a laboratory test-bed, apart from allowing ready access for trials, enables a range of satellite orbits to be investigated. Major emphasis is planed on breadth of coverage in terms of satellite and terrestrial segments not limited to one particular system or orbital type, but encompassing different radio access techniques.
Summary of Trial
The trials will implement inter-segment hand-over, i.e. hand-over between a terrestrial channel and a satellite channel, as well as other network functionalities including mobility management call routing, and resource management. The trials will also validate the wireless sub-system and network components in a variety of environments.
Key issues
- Demonstration of multi-media, multi-environment communication services using the space component of UMTS
- End-user trials and assessment
- Technology demonstrator
- Contribution to development of common specifications and standards
- identification of new market opportunities
