Agent based mobile access to information services

Obiettivo

Main Objective

AMASE will investigate techniques for enhancing an existing agent platform to support stationary and mobile agents for wireless mobile communication environment. The project will focus on:

-High degree of user mobility between various networks, devices and physical location.

-Small and mobile devices for PC, personal digital assistants and GSM with SMS transmit and receive capabilities.

The main goals are:

-to design, specify and implement the AMASE agent environment.

-to verify and demonstrate, with an agent-based application, the technical and economic suitability of agent technology for commercial wireless mobile applications.

AMASE Scenario

Technical Approach

The project distinguishes between the agent environment (Agent Facilities plus Communication Facilities) and the agent-based application.
Step 1 - Specification of the Mobile Agent Facilities
The differences between the agent systems prevent interpretability and proliferation of agent technology. In order to promote both interoperability and system diversity, the project will review the emerging OMG MAF specification where it is applicable in the AMASE Agent Facilities. Additionally the specification of the AMASE Communication Facilities will be based on the MASE specification of the OnTheMove project.
Step 2 - Enhancement of an Existing Agent Platform for Wireless Mobile Applications
AMASE will use the Siemens SWARM Platform as the starting point. The SWARM system is fully written in JAVA, known within the consortium, and the source code is available. The platform enhancement development will support secure and efficient agent operations, cost-effective adaptability to wireless network characteristics, high degree of user mobility, high degree of scalability for various device platforms, and UMTS service capabilities;

Step 3 - The Wireless Mobile Application Scenario - AMASE Demonstrator
AMASE will apply the developed agent environment in the domain of Wireless Mobile Applications, which support both stationary and mobile. The application will enable bank customers to access and trigger electronic banking services from their wireless mobile device.
Step 4 - Evaluation of the AMASE Demonstrator
An expert evaluation, which conducts qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the performance of the functions of the AMASE agent environment and recommendations for the relevant standard fora such as OMG MAF will be performed.

Summary of Trial

The AMASE Demonstrator will implement an application in the banking domain using the AMASE agent environment.
Expected Achievements

-a full operational demonstrator.

-an API delivered as a structured library of objects and classes.

-contributions to the OMG MAF standardisation body.

-an overall techno-economical evaluation of the techniques, including conclusions drawn from the Benchmarking tests.

Expected Impact

-The demonstration of the usefulness of agent technology in a telecommunications environment,

-development of a distributed telecommunication infrastructure based on agent technology,

-influence and/or adopt the development of agent-related standards.

Main contributions to the programme objectives:
Main deliverables
Provision of an agent-based open communications platform to support stationary and mobile agents for wireless mobile communications, trialed in a banking application.
Contribution to the programme
Assessment of the technical and economic suitability of agent technology for commercial wireless mobile applications.
Key Issues The key issues investigated by AMASE are:

-scaleable agent platform, to investigate, develop and support
a. the operations in the agent platform according to the system resources,
b. a flexible and modular agent platform software architecture to allow various degrees of functional richness,
c. a scheme for the agent platform to deal with potential overloading of visiting agents and events, and
d. a minimal agent platform core which can fit various handhold devices;

-network adaptation, to enhance
a. the protocols in the agent environment to adapt to the available quality of service of the accessed network (e.g. bandwidth and delay), and
b. the protocols in the agent environment to allow reliable agent operations over sporadic wireless connections;

-mobile operation, to investigate
a. a scheme for operations in the agent environment to continue seamlessly or recover while a device moves between networks, and
b. an agent operation failure notification scheme to allow recovery;

-secure agent execution, to
a. investigate the adaptation of existing security mechanisms for agent communication to solve the traditional security problems and
b. research on the protection of mobile agents against malicious agent systems;

-customisable agents, to
a. explore and validate the ease of customisation via agents to adapt to user's needs and application environment,
b. investigate a basic development tool to facilitate the composition and integration of agents into an agent-based application,
c. investigate the appropriate agent structure and agent execution model to allow easy update of the agent code and data, and investigate the appropriate communication language for a typical application;
