Convergence of internet-atm-satellite

Obiettivo

Main Objective

The objective of COIAS is to demonstrate the feasibility of designing the Global Internet Infrastructure (GII) based on ATM and satellite networks. The implementation will rely on the capabilities and functionality of the new generation of Internet protocol Ipv6. The project will focus mainly on performance, quality of service (QoS), mobility and security features. Several applications; such as Air Traffic Control, Air Navigation and widespread personal applications will be demonstrated on the COIAS platform.

Technical Approach

Each project partner is already involved in the development of new generation communication products dealing with Internet, ATM or satellite. The COIAS project team intends to participate actively in the standards forming bodies; in particular the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) groups. This should lead to the efficient dissemination of the R&D results and provide immediate feedback on the technical choices of COIAS.
COIAS intends to address important technical issues such as: Internet and ATM QoS mapping, RSVP signalling over ATM and satellite links, IP flows aggregation, network resource optimisation, load balancing between ATM and satellite networks, security for mobile access and reliable multicast transport protocol. The second stage of the project will be the design phase which will be led by two well known research labs and four industrial partners that are already working in the Internet and ATM domain.
The development phase should provide IPv6 protocol stacks with the added functionnalities (mobility, security, QoS management) enabling existing applications to run and benefit from those new communication protocols. The platform integration phase will lead to the availability of a European platform allowing the evaluation of a GII prototype network.
The trials phase will enable performance analysis of the implemented solutions and assessment of the accuracy of the technical choices. This phase will lead to a complete analysis of the results and should assist in identifying the required evolution path of the GII design.

Summary of Trial

Comprehensive trials will be conducted over the COIAS platform, which relies on ATM and satellite links between the different partners located in France, Belgium, UK and Germany. Ipv6 routers will be used over the WAN links to interconnect local platforms located at the partners' sites. These local platforms include LAN, ATM LAN and Wireless LAN. A three month trial has been defined to test the architecture firstly with generic applications and then with the aeronautical application that could be considered as representative of future GII applications mixing audio, video, data in a mobile and secure environment.
Expected Achievements

-Development of Ipv6 software including security, mobility and Quality of Service management.

-Development of key management software for security management.

-Adaptations of existing applications to new Internet protocol stacks, comprehensive trials results for feedback on the GII network architecture design.

Expected Impact

The COIAS platform is one of the first Ipv6 based network architectures in Europe. A project such as COIAS will yield significant results in and outside Europe within this area.

Key Issues

The major issue of this project is determining how new Internet protocols can make best use of available high speed WAN links, such as ATM and satellite, to offer the next generation services to the user.
