Novel antifungal proteins

The project is aimed at the further development of new molecular strategies for the control of plant pathogenic fungi. 462 different plant species were screened by testing extracts for antifungal activity against different things. The antofungal compounds were purified from over 20 plant species and were found to represent either of six distinct families of small sized cysteine rich antifungal proteins. The genes encodiing these proteins have been cloned and transferred to transgenic plants. These plants are being evaluated for enhanced resistance against fungal diseases.
