ADAPTATION OF LUPINUS MUTABILIS TO EUROPEAN SOIL AND CLIMATE CONDITIONS

Obiettivo

The present project proposes to look for early maturing and determinate or semi-determinate type of growth habit in Lupinus mutabilis. This means modifying the architecture of the plant by a combination of a mutation and cross breeding programmes. This morphological change should be associated with large seeds. It also proposes to improve unfavourable characteristics such as frost resistance especially during the juvenile stages of development (for Portugal and Spain) and disease resistance in the milder climates of some European countries. A further important aspect of this project will be to improve the quality of the seed protein and oil. This research will produce genotypes capable of growing under European soil and climatic conditions.

In order to allow the optimum use of new forms of plant breeding, comprehensive studies must be undertaken in the genetic and agro-physiological fields.
