USE OF A NEW TECHNICAL ENZYME AND ITS BIOMIMETIC SYSTEM TO IMPROVE THE PROPERTIES OF POPLAR HIGH YIELD PULP

Ziel

Enzymatic treatment of CTMPs will be carried out before hydrogen peroxide bleaching to increase the brightness, reduce the chemical charge and enhance the colour stability to light. Study of Manganese peroxidase enzymes and their biomimetic system and application at pilot plant and industrial scales on CTMPs of poplar clones selected for their different behaviour to mechanical pulping.

The aims are :

- to select poplar clones for CTMP for industrial applications and for forestry policy (pilot experiments will be carried out);

- to provide the engineering basis for a biobleaching process of the above pulps to improve quality, to increase brightness stability. Basic research will be carried out at laboratory level on an industrial material (pulp manufactured by one of the industrial partners). Working up of Manganese peroxidase (MnP) enzymes on isolated substrates, treatment of poplar CTMPs by MnP for the study of the potentialities.

- to improve the action of enzymes with the use of biomimetic manganic organic acid complexes; - to verify the enzymatic action on pilot plant pulps and on an industrial line producing poplar CTMPs with alkaline peroxide. The enzyme will be produced in sufficient quantity at industrial scale in the best determined conditions to use during a several day trial.

High yield pulps are nowadays a very interesting fibre resource for the paper industry. Poplar is used for its many advantages in chemithermomechanical (CTMP) processes : bright colour, opacity and easy to defibrate. These produced pulps are bleached with hydrogen peroxide at high level of brightness in order to introduce them in high quality paper grade.
