Obiettivo
The present state of knowledge on the effect on malachite green in the environment is poor, with little published work on the fates or pathways of the dye in the aquatic environment. The vast majority of the literature relates to studies on its efficacy in the treatment of PKD etc and its effects on the fish (primarily at cellular level).
While it is considered that environmental factors such as temperature and pH are highly significant in the decomposition of the dye, little effort has gone into tracing the fates of the breakdown products such as the relatively insoluble carbinol base. No literature has been traced on its effect on natural processes or on its partitioning between biota, water and sediments.
The aim of the research is to concentrate on the interactions between malachite green and the aquatic environment. The study will involve laboratory and field work at a number of chosen sites in Ireland, UK and possibly continental Europe if suitable locations can be found.
The proposed work can be divided into five main objectives:
Appraisal and refinement of existing standard HPLC techniques for detection and estimation of malachite green
Determination of the effects of physico-chemical parameters
Determination of its breakdown pathway(s) and fate(s) in the environment
Determination of persistence and accumulation in the different environmental compartments (biota, water, sediments)
Examination of current practices, effectiveness and possible alternatives
The bulk of the work will be carried out in the Environmental Sciences Unit, Trinity College, Dublin.
Field investigations will be carried out in conjunction with the ISGA and its members who have agreed to support this project. A similar situation exists in respect of the MAFF Fish Diseases Laboratory, Weymouth, who are cooperating in this project.
