Sea Bass nutrition : evaluation of protein requirements and development of new feeding strategies with low pollution extruded diets.

Obiettivo

The main aim of the project is to obtain low pollution extruded diets with optimal protein, lipid and carbohydrate levels for seabass nutrition, reducing feeding and filtration costs in fish factories with water recirculation systems.
Trials concerning growth of fingerlings were based on the replacement of part of the protein content of diets with carbohydrates or lipids, with protein levels varying between 40 and 55%, carbohydrate levels between 20 and 35%, and lipids from 6 to 18%.

The overall results suggest that the percentage of carbohydrates in diets would not be higher than 30, and lipids could vary between 12 and 14%. Within the range of composition of diets used in these experiments, the optimum level of protein determined was 45%.

The successive experiments with juveniles, when the variation of carbohydrate, lipid and protein level was assessed, led to an optimum level of 45% for protein with respect to growth rate. This result is independent of the raw material used as a source of protein (corn gluten or fish meal). With this level of protein, the best percentage of lipids in diets was 18%.

Data from the excretion trials carried out at both ages, suggest a close relationship between level of protein in diets and level of feeding, and nitrogen released into the water. For this reason the protein content should be maintained at a moderate level, and this proposal is in agreement with the conclusions from the growth trials.

The protein level did not significantly affect the soluble phosphorus excreted, which was reduced when fish were fed on diets containing gluten.

As a general conclusion the level of protein should be established at about 45% dry matter and corn gluten should be used in order to reduce the excretion pollutant effect and simultaneously to maintain an optimum rate of growth of sea bass.
Relevant aspects in the research programme are:

To find an optimal diet composition in terms of protein, lipid, carbohydrate and energy for fast growth and low conversion index in both fingerlings and finishing sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax).

To reduce the organic matter water loading by using cooked-extruded diets, more digestible and very stable in water. A proper choice of feeding level will be studied.

To avoid dietary nitrogen and phosphorus wastage (main polluted elements at recirculation fish factories) by identifying optimal protein levels and replacing fish meal by other protein sources with low ash content (i.e. soybean meal).

Research work will develop in the next phases: initial diets formulation and manufacturing; feeding trials on fingerlings; feeding trials on finishings; amplifying diets formulation and manufacturing; large scale trial in recirculated water fish factory.
