Study the need for system integration test facilities

Obiettivo

Elaboration of a high-level process model for integration, highlighting the following phases:
- identification of configuration (system and test facility components)
- definition of the integration process
- performance of integration.

Covering the R&D and industrial stages, elaboration of a reference life cycle model which identifies different integration phases (conceptual, functional, physical, operational), each phase corresponding to a sub life cycle and being characterized with specific products.

Establishment of the impact of product-related issues on integration: for instance, safety requirements reveal the need for specific concerns during integration such as proving compliance and adequacy of design choices (e.g. verification of failure isolation).

Production of a project description guide and a project analysis framework relative to integration activities providing guidelines for a project description in terms of project scope, integration activities within the scope of the EAGLES reference model, means to support verification of system design, current status, history and future plans.

The assessment of current integration practices and the needs analysis, both using a generalisation approach, and the highlighting of improvement needed.

Issues relative to the elaboration of an integration laboratory have been investigated:
- The objectives and concerns of an integration strategy are described and assessed, strategic choices being reflected through six major activities: "plan integration", "monitor integration", "assess integration", "manage configurations", "control the interfaces", "perform the integration".
- A selection of tools and methods is proposed to support the integration activities:

- a planning method and requirements for a cost/benefit analysis are described to support integration planning
- an information flow model based on ISO structure, insight on the types of interfaces that need to be controlled, and preliminary requirements for a functional architecture prototype are provided to support interface control
- a method to select the relevant activities to perform integration together with general requirements on the integration test are also provided.

- A planning strategy for implementing the proposed activities, tools and methods is selected using a general approach for improving the integration process.
The EAGLES study addressed the need for a European air ground laboratory for efficient air traffic management (ATM) system integration taking into account the specific issues which set the ATM system apart from other large systems.

EAGLES prepared practical solutions in an overall strategy usable by the entire ATM R&D and Industry community in order to support integration of the future European ATM system. EAGLES scope encompassed the overall ATM and a variety of integration activities ranging from concept integration to operational integration performed along the system development life cycle.

Exploitation potential

EAGLES results can be exploited under ECARDA:

- by the European Commission and Eurocontrol initiating actions in the domains of:

- integration cost identification and recording
- setting integration objectives of ECARDA prototypes in consistency with integration objectives of the future operational system
- setting integration criteria
- imposing standards from ICAO and other recognised bodies on ECARDA projects (specification method, documentation, interfaces)
- configuration management of ECARDA results
- functional data-base of the future ATM system
- functional architecture platform.

- by each ECARDA project involved in an integration step considering the following aspects:

- integration cost follow up
- identifying the integration objectives and planning the integration process
- documenting the interfaces and the functional specifications.
