Objectif A reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method to separate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP), adenosine monophosphate (AMP), inosine monophosphate (IMP), inosine and adenosine, with a detection limit of 3 to 5 pmol, was developed. Using this method to identify the extracellular ATP degradation products at the innervated frog sartorius muscle, the following ectoenzymes were characterised: ATPase, ADPase, 5'-nucleotidase, AMP deaminase. 2 alternative pathways for the degradation of extracellular AMP were also identified along with inhibitors of extracellular AMP metabolism.
