COUNTER MESURES TO THE UPTAKE OF RADIONUCLIDES FROM SOILS BY FOOD CROPS; THE LONG-TERM AVAILABILITY OF RADIONUCLIDES

Obiettivo

- STUDY OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOUR OF RADIONUCLIDES.
- COLLECTION OF DATA NECESSARY FOR MODELING THE RADIONUCLIDES TRANSFER.
In studies on counter measures to the uptake of radionuclides from soils by food crops the soil solution composition varied widely throughout the growing period. The specific effects of the counter measures were, however, clearly visible on the sandy and loamy soil, but not on clay soil. Application of zinc and manganese, for example, enhanced their concentration in the soil solution whereas liming reduced their concentration as well as the strontium-90 to calcium ratio. Changes induced by measures which were applied only once or twice, persisted during subsequent growing periods. Significant and almost systematic (ie for all elements) fluctuations in transfer factors were observed throughout the years.

2. BASIC RESEARCH LONG-TERM AVAILABILITY.
3. COUNTERMEASURES TO REDUCE SOIL-TO-PLANT UPTAKE WITH EMPHASIS ON PRACTICABILITY.
