Obiettivo
The objective of the European Late Effects Project Group (EULEP) is to improve the understanding of late biological effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. Its Work consists of the standardization and development of methodology in the member institutions, the coordination and promotion of cooperative research by means of task groups, and the organization of training activities, workshops and symposia. Twenty three laboratories are currently participating in this work. In addition, EULEP has also developed useful links with certain laboratories outside the European Communities.
The European Late Effects Project Group (EULEP) has been set up to improve the understanding of late biological effects of exposure to ionizing radiation and 23 laboratories participate in the research. The standardization and development of methodology is carried out by 4 committees:
Committee of External Radiation Dosimetry and Techniques;
Committee of Internal Radiation Dosimetry and Techniques;
Committee of Pathology;
Committee of Cell and Molecular Biology.
There is also an Expert Group on Physiological Methodology. A number of task groups coordinate research between institutions and training courses have been organized for young radiobiologists.
Research has been carried out in the following areas:
molecular studies of radiation induced osteosarcoma;
molecular studies of radiation induced haemopoietic neoplasias;
cell biology of haemopoietic tissues;
cellular basis of late vascular changes in the areas at risk in the irradiated brain;
radiation effects on the heart;
radiation effects on preimplantation mouse embryos;
radiation effects on the development of the central nervous system;
radiation induced carcinogenesis in the liver;
interspecies comparison of lung clearance;
deposition and clearance of inhaled particles in the human respiratory tract;
reduction of risk of late effects from incorporated radionuclides;
stem cell studies after contamination with alpha emitters;
metabolism, dosimetry and effects of bone seeking radionuclides;
fetal dosimetry and effects of incorporated radionuclides;
retention and absorption of ingested radionuclides and irradiation of the gastrointestinal tract.
Symposia have been held on 'The role of the alveolar macrophage in the clearance of inhaled particles', 'Molecular biological methods in pathology' and ' Molecular markers for differentiation'.
Standardization and development of methodology
The Committee of External Radiation Dosimetry and Techniques is conducting a series of interlaboratory comparisons of X-ray dosimetry for whole body irradiation of mice. It is also concerned with physical aspects of total body irradiation in man.
The Committee of Internal Radiation Dosimetry and Techniques is developing coordination and standardization in relation to those task groups which work on different aspects of the dosimetry of radionuclides in the body.
The Committee of Pathology continues to organize slide seminars in an ongoing review of different areas of histopathology relevant to the study of late effects. .SP 0 The EULEP Pathology Atlas is being extended by the addition of new sections.
The Committee of Cell and Molecular Biology is mainly concerned with the introduction and standardization of new techniques in molecular biology that are relevant to the development of the Radiation Protection Programme.
Coordination and promotion of cooperative research
The coordination of collaborative research work between the member institutions is organized by means of 15 task groups. Their ongoing work is summarized briefly as follows:
Molecular approach to the study of radiation-induced osteosarcoma.
Cell and molecular studies on radiation-induced haemopoietic neoplasias.
Cell biology of haemopoietic tissues.
Cellular basis of late vascular changes in the areas at risk in the irradiated brain.

Effects of irradiation on preimplantation mouse embryos.
Effects of radiation on the development of the central nervous system. .SP 0 Radiation-induced carcinogenesis in the liver.

Training Activities
EULEP is taking steps to promote the training of young radiobiologists. High priority continues to be attached to the support of scientific exchange visits between laboratories for the purpose of acquiring technical expertise.
