Linking biological databases using the common object request broker architecture

Ziel

Databases in the biosciences describe a wide spectrum of complex biological information distributed throughout Europe, and the world. The diversity of these databases makes efforts towards integrating and accessing these data difficult. The Common Object Request Broker Architecture is an international standard developed by the world's largest software consortium. It specifies a coherent framework in which distributed applications can interoperate. Such a standard is crucial in the linking of biological databases. This project will provide a critical appraisal of this standard and an empirical validation through implementation experience. The project will cover a diverse set of data. These data include several of the larger established databases (EMBL, SwissProt, PIR, MSD, GDB) and several new and emerging databases (TRANSFAC, P53, RHdb). Services and client applications will be developed that exploit these data. These applications will contain new client programs that allow access to integrated views of these underlying data. This project is a vital step towards providing the infrastructure required to realise the wealth of information held in the ever increasing number of databases with which the biologist must contend.
