Obiettivo
The objective of the project is to get an answer to the following two questions:
- Which issues are on the Moral Agenda of biotech companies?
- Do these issues and their related ethical activities match with what society and the government expect them to do?
The goal of this project is to gather information about the Moral Agenda of biotech companies, to present this information and, on the basis of this information, to formulate recommendations to the EC about the ethical bottlenecks companies come across and which endanger their (inter)national competitive position.
In this project a State of the Art is produced of how biotech companies deal with the ethical aspects of biotechnology, how this corresponds with the social or public opinion about the ethical aspects of biotechnology, and the place these ethical activities have in the companies strategies. This will make it possible to analyze the similarities between the moral agenda of the (national) society - think of the public acceptance of biotechnology - and the companies Moral Agenda. The degree of similarity is an important factor in the competitive advantage of a company.
The methodology used in this project will be a mix of exploring and analysing publications on specific aspects of this project (regulation, moral views in society, moral views of companies), and interviews with employees of ten selected North and South European biotech companies. On the basis of the information gathered in this way an analysis will be made of the resemblances and differences between the companies moral agenda and the national moral agenda's on biotechnology, and the interaction between the two agendas in the Northern and Southern European countries the companies are located in.
The preliminary results of the project will be presented in a written form to the representatives from the companies which have participated in the project, experts in the field of (bio) ethics and business and responsible EU-officials. Their comments will be included in the final report.
