Simulation and monitoring of surgical robotics tasks

Obiettivo

Surgical robotics is a rapidly growing economic field. More and more are developing robots for hip and knee replacement, guiding surgical instruments, holding microscopes or endoscopes. In Europe almost 6000 hospitals may buy one or more. On the other hand, surgical robots are complex systems that are heterogeneous linked to imaging systems, image processing systems, navigation systems, treatment planning systems etc. The need is for an information exchange and management concept in the field of surgical navigation and robotics. By integrating medical image processing systems, CAD systems and robot simulation systems. Furthermore, the existing prototypes for tele-consulting in the medical field can be fully integrated in graphical simulation and monitoring systems. In addition surgical robots need a standardised interface for realistic robot simulation and exact treatment planning.

The prime industrial/economical objectives are:
- Increase the market for robot simulation systems by using them in hospitals and clinics as planning and simulation systems;
- Increase the market for medical image analysing systems by interfacing them with robot simulation systems. A new market for realistic treatment planning systems and operation education systems will arise.

Support data interface, exchange protocols and data base formats to allow producers of medical instruments to visualise their products and to educate medical doctors using simulation systems. Support data interface, exchange protocols and data base formats for real time monitoring of executed operations within medical tele-consulting systems. Reduce the development costs of surgical robot systems by a realistic robot and treatment simulation. Prepare future user by showing them new applications. The social objectives are: Simplifications of the use of robots within in the daily clinical routine to gain time and make these products more user friendly. The patients benefit from the use of robots by the resulting quality: Operation time is reduced, the number of operations is reduced for example, implants in maxillofacial surgery have higher stability. High tech simulation and robotics in surgery are new challenging fields in medical instruments industry. It will increase the employment in the medical instrument's production and simulation software industry. In order to reach these objectives a project team have been formed consisting of 4 SME as core proposers providing products and having know how in the areas mentioned. 2 other proposers providing the surgical robot and medical instruments, devices. 2 research institutes: one having available an experimental operation room equipped with surgical robots and all other required devices and the other experienced in the fields of robotics, modelling, simulation, and control engineering.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
