RECYCLING OF THERMOPLASTIC COMPOSITES

Obiettivo

This project has shown, that for a specific type of plastic waste stream , high quality and high price engineering thermoplastic composites , the concept of material recycling can be implemented with success both technically and economically. In particular PPS40%GF, that is not recycled nowadays has a large potential for recycling and reuse in high demanding applications again. Given the proper recycling process as investigated in this project, PPS40%GF could be very well recycled by regranulation and upgrading. A pre-classification database system has been developed to extend the work of this project to other applications in recycling of plastic materials. The project has also shown that materials , either virgin or recycled , in wet service conditions should be assessed through long term tests like corrosion resistance and creep. These tests lead to much different conclusions than do simple short term tests. Recycled materials then appear almost as good as virgin materials which is not shown from short term testing. In dry service conditions, short term tests will be enough for performance assessment.
The aim of the project is to develop and optimise process of recycling high performance thermoplastic composites which have been exposed to hot and humid environments. The materials considered are used in industrial products such as hot water thermostats and pumps, electric switches, cable connectors and long-rod insulators. The possibility of reusing the materials in similar advanced applications will be investigated.

The project will concentrate on the following objectives :

- To develop quality control methods and to establish a classification system for post industrial materials before recycling.

- To optimise the regranulating process using post industrial material of short fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites in order to compound new homogeneous material.

- Optimisation of the compounding process by adding coupling agent additives to recreate and improve materials properties especially the fibre matrix interface. Fibre-matrix adhesion will be optimised regarding hygro-thermo-mechanical resistance.

- Production of test specimens and industrial components by injection moulding. The influence of the compounding process, different history or ageing conditions and the fraction recycled material into virgin material will be evaluated.

- For selected compounds investigation of the long term properties which include exposure in water with acid and alkaline additives at 20-150 C, fatigue and tensile creep testing as a function of load, temperature, relative humidity and water pH 2-11. The residual properties will be determined with special attention to fibre matrix interface.

- Correlation of damage state, stiffness and fatigue life and thereby develop models for predicting the residual properties of a compound after a certain mechanical and environmental loading.
