The work investigates the use of high temperature adhesives for industrial use with composites and metals where safety-critical structures need to withstand temperatures ranging from -55 to 180 C. Four general types of cyanate adhesives were investigated; these included two different commercial monomers, cyanate-epoxy combinations and rubber toughening. The chemical and mechanical properties of these formulated resins were evaluated and certain combinations tested as adhesives on metal substrates. A sample of film adhesive using a rubber-toughened cyanate-epoxy formulation was manufactured and tested with metal and composite adherends. Joint strength was generally retained over a wide temperature range on metal adherends. These materials show exceptionally low water uptake which is a benefit for long term performance. Modifications were also made to the epoxy adhesive, this time using physical changes rather than altering the chemical composition. A method was found which increased the peel strength by at least three fold and which also produced stronger joints when used in a bonded stiffener-laminate structure. The main result of this programme is the increased knowledge of the principal advantages and drawbacks of different chemical modifications of cyanate esters with regard to high temperature adhesive applications. A vital aspect of the programme was the demonstration of high temperature materials in the production and testing of demonstrator articles, including aerospace construction and design methods. A novel test method, the Stringer Bonding Test (SBT), has been developed within the programme. This tests the strength of a specimen which is more representative of a structure than simple bonded laminates. It has been shown to work well and give reproducible quantifiable results and may be useful as a test method in the future.
