Bayer has developed an economic route to realize the synthesis of 3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene (EDT) and is now selling this product under the commercial name of Baytron M.
This monomer is used in the manufacture of polymeric organic conductors (PEDT) for capacitor counterelectrodes. But, this is not the only application, the product can also be used for antistatic finishing of plastic and glass, and IR absorbtion other new applications using its properties are emerging.
The material is now available on the market for use by all interested companies.
ERA Technology and TPC have succesfully developed and implemented a process of impregnation of aluminium capacitors. This of course also involved designing the right machinery for this process.
Alcatel developed new SMPS that in 1995 used OSCON or solid tantalum capacitors but these existing capacitors didn't cover the needs in temperature stability and ESR.
Therefore Alcatel had been interested to participate in this project as potential end-user of aluminium SMD capacitors.
By the end of the project however, a new type of highly performing tantalum SMD capacitors appeared on the market, available from several sources. Alcatel concluded that these tantalum capacitors satisfied these requirements. Especially the ratio of capacitance to volume of these capacitors is very high compared to what would be achievable with aluminium capacitors.
SMPS using the new type of tantalum SMD capacitors will be launched on the market for the GSM base stations during the year 1997.
Surface Mount Technology is rapidly replacing traditional methods of circuit manufacture and most component, the electrolytic capacitor capacitor, required for many circuit applications has proven difficult to produce in a surface-mount version. Electrolytic capacitors have the advantage of a high capacitance to volume ratio combined with low loss and good power handling capability but existing types have either poor high frequency performance or cannot withstand temperatures encountered in surface-mounting(a surface-mount component must survive 260 C for 10s during wave soldering). Solid electolyte surface mount capacitors employing a solid organic conductor have recently been demonstrated on a laboratory scale. These have all the advantages of electrolytic capacitors together with the ability to withstand wave-soldering temperatures. Compared to other solid electrolyte technologies they offer simpler and lower cost manufacturer and superior high frequency performance. This project will develop the manufacturing technique that will be required to make production of these components a practical proposition and enable Europe to gain a 37M ECU/y share of this rapidly expanding market.
In order to stay ahead of Japanese effort in this area, it is necessary for manufacture to begin as soon as possible after completion of the present project and it is therefore intended to begin production within 2 years of project completion;
