SOUND QUALITY IN CARS ASSESSMENT AND ENGINEERING OF SOLUTIONS

Ziel

The modelling techniques for combustion noise developed during this project will enable car manufacturers to simulate this noise as heard by the occupants and relate changes in its character to changes in combustion chamber pressure. The manufacturers will also be able to investigate the effect on this noise due to structural changes to the engine (through the finite element model of the engine) and due to structural/acoustic changes to the car (through the SEA model of the car). This provides a valuable development tool for improving the internal sound quality of the car. Furthermore, much insight has been gained into the construction of a purely theoretical SEA model of a car. This will enable completely new designs to be evaluated with much greater confidence.

The objective noise metrics developed during this project have contributed significantly to the understanding of existing and future noise quality problems in cars.
The quality of car interior sound is an increasingly important aspect of the acoustic comfort,as experienced by the driver and passengers. It is becoming one of the main selection criteria for the customer. In order to come to speed with the Japanese developments in this field, and in order to stay competitive,it is prerogative for the European car industry to put researh and development effort in this field.

This project aims at going beyond the common practice evaluation approach to sound quality. It aims at the development of an integrated engineering approach to solving sound quality problems, and even design for sound quality, addressing as such the causal relationship between the vibro-acoustic behaviour of a car and the sound qualify of the sound pressure field, generated in the car interior. It is only by determing this causal relationship, that the origin of the sound quality problem can be tackled;this origin being the structure-and air-borne contribution of the different noise sources to the acoustic pressure in the car interior.

A number of technologies will be developed in the field of measurement and signal processing,of objective descriptors for subjective evaluation,of vibro-acoustic source and system modelling,in order to come to an integrated engineering approach to design for sound quality. This will allow sound quality to be assessed in terms of objectively measurable engineering parameters, relating as such sound quality to sound source, vehicle and component characteristics. The technologies developed within the project will be applied to four well-selected major contributing sources to the sound quality in car interiors:road/tire noise, engine order noise, diesel engine and aerodynamic noise.
