DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW DESIGN APPROACH FOR MMC COMPONENTS BASED ON FATIGUE MECHANICS AND RELIABILITY ASSESSMENT

Obiettivo

The industrial use of metal matrix composites (MMCs) is still limited in the EC due to the lack of reliable design tools and the small amount of information available on such materials. A system for the prediction of expected life and strength of MMC structures would be of great benefit in the efficient utilization of these materials. Such a system would be the outcome of the project, albeit with certain restrictions within this programme with regard to the particular material and processing route.

The proposal brings together two major industries in the automotive field which show a commonality of interest in MMCs applications. The work of the project includes material production, microstructural and micromechanical characterization, fatigue and fracture testing, damage characterization, deterministic and prohabilistic modeling, and validation tests. The products of the research can be classified into two groups:

- Design tools, which include, for the first time, predictive models for reliability analysis for this type of material. Thes tools will also provide a basis for quality control of material prior to fabrication and at component inspection.

- Prototypes of automobile components, which will be tested under realistic loading conditions.
