Combined deterministic probabilistic computational models have been developed for the prediction of the residual life and residual compressive strength of multidirectional carbon fibre reinforced epoxy (CFRE) composite components. A new methodology has been generated for determining the residual life and residual strength of damaged multidirectional composites, which is at the near to market stage of development. The development of a C-scan filter and its use with a 50 MHz foil transducer has resulted in improved resolution of ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE), thus enabling the detection of matrix cracks. Following the sucessful development of procedures for the application of extra thin gratings to the surfaces of specimens, optomechanical methodologies were devised for measuring the strains associated with delaminations as small as 90 um radius. Additionally, the methodology and scanning equipment for measuring logitudinal and transverse strain at the same point of a specimen's surface by optomechanical means have been developed. A large potential market exists for this type of predictive tool if its credibility is accepted, and economic benefits could result in all areas of design, manufacture and maintenance of composite structures.
