THE DEVELOPMENT OF STANDARDISED PERFORMANCE TESTS AND CRITERIA FOR CONCRETE REPAIR SYSTEMS

Obiettivo

The project was completed largely as planned, but the main goals have only been partially achieved. While it was possible to induce and accelerate deterioration mechanisms which are similar to those seen in practice and to rank repair systems in order of performance, it has often been impossible to quantify the acceleration factor with an acceptable degree of reliability.

Critical features/properties of the repair systems have been identified, however, and how they interact to influence performance. No single property is likely to give a true indication of performance, whether this is related to maintenance of adhesion, protection of reinforcement of structural performance, but relative performance factors can be derived from functions which relate two or more properties.

A methodology for testing has also been developed which is related for the exposure classes given in prEN206 for concrete structures. Essential and desirable tests are identified and the way in which results should be interpreted, eg, by considering combinations of properties, is defined for some exposure classes. Within this methodology, it is recommended that separate tests are used to measure the effects of the repair application and the potential performance under ideal placing conditions. Trying to combine the two has been found to make interpretation of results very difficult.

The substantial volume of data obtained in the six repair systems used in the evaluation has resulted in a much better understanding of how repairs work and thus led to recommendations for the future development of repair systems.

Thus, while the project goals were not fully achieved, substantial benefit has been obtained from this programme, and some of the specific test methods have been submitted to the appropriate CEN standards committees.
The repair of concrete damaged by reinforcement corrosion is a worldwide problem costing with estimated costs of $10 billion annually. A large proportion of these repairs are ineffective and fail, requiring further repair.

To be durable a repair must adhere to the substrate concrete and protect the underlying steel against corrosion. It must therefore have physical and chemical properties consistent with the design and use of the structure it is applied to.

No co-ordinated standards and methods exist to guide engineers and structure owners in selection and specification of repair materials.

This programme will compare the performance of repairs to existing structures; test repairs which have been exposed for 10 years; repairs exposed to accelerated weathering regimes; large scale, repaired members subjected to structural testing and accelerated weathering.

The results of these tests will enable direct comparison of natural and accelerated testing. The results of this comparison will assist with formal standardisation of performance tests and criteria.
