This project is interested in the major problems of induced ground vibrations and acoustic noise. The research project also considers other important needs such as the demand of overall system performances improvement in terms of reliability, durability, maintenability and the necessity of enhancing the manufacture process both in factory and in situ by producing and by laying prefabricated concrete products. In this regard the state of the art at the start of this project in the field of railway track systems showed the potential optimal solution to be the employment of prefabricated slab tracks, possible with other components and devices integrated in order to provide the requested performances. The project, which will have been developed through real needs specification, design methodologies implementation, specimens construction and experimental tests, has been made for the design of better cost effective track ssytems and thus have a significant economic impact on the basis of a real industrial need both for new railways and fro renewals.
The main results achieved are the following: detailed identification of reference performance specification that the new advanced track must have; design criteria, taking into consideration also specific needs and technical local traditions; analytical procedures validated that, with advanced finished elements models, consider: structural aspects, soil, track structure, rail interaction and numerical simulation for noise emission and propagation using available numerical codes to contain noise affects; innovative materials and products (in particular innovative elastomeric mats and reactive concrete silencer); detailed design, construction and testing methodology for a new advanced track system that reduces vibration adapted to different track-line classification and with technical solutions to contain noise emission; reliability, availability, durability and easy maintainability of the track system through the use of prefabricated concrete products. From the results obtained, the system could be easy developed in future without taking into consideration the normal track solutions already available for metro, tram or railways, and also: high speed train applications for reducing environmental impacts; small lateral railway walls using specific concrete resonators; precast elements for external buildings for particular noisy working sites; special concrete products that can reduce existing vibration and noise emissions. Economic advantages include: low cost over the total service life of the track; low infrastructural costs as a consequence of low weight (this aspects is important for bridges and viaducts); minimum initial increased cost in comparison with traditional technologies (and they are completely covered taking into consideration only maintenance costs, without considering the environmental aspects).
