Obiettivo
BE95-1169 Selective and Clean Processes for the Side Chain Oxidation of Alkylaromatics
The major objective of this project is the development of new processes to achieve the side chain oxidation of alkylaromatic compounds, which may yield different types of oxygenated organic chemicals (alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids, anhydrides and epoxides) with a large number of industrial applications as intermediates in the manufacture of plastics, fibers, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc.
At present, these oxidation reactions are commercially carried out by processes with important objections: formation of effluents causing environment pollution problems, use of corrosive conditions and low to moderate selectivities when synthesizing partially oxygenated chemicals, such as ketones and aldehydes.
The key of the new oxidation processes will be based on the use of new heterogeneous catalysts, that will be prepared by supporting and isolating transition-metals on micro- and mesoporous solid matrixes, mainly zeolitic materials, in order to get high catalytic activity and selectivity towards the target products. The processes are also expected to present advantages compared to the conventional ones in terms of raw material utilization, energy consumption and environmental impact.
The project will involve both laboratory and bench-scale research phases including economic and environmental evaluation and comparison with conventional oxidation processes. The partners involved include researchers from universities, research institutes and industry. The adequate balance present between academic and industrial partners will lead to a synergic effect to develop the project taking into account complementary points of view.
