Process Chains for Rapid Technical Prototypes

Obiettivo

Objectives and content

In all manufacturing sectors there is a continuous need to reduce the time to market of products, and to reduce the costs of design and manufacture of those products. An essential part of the process of taking a product from design to manufacture is the 'Prototyping' stage, which can be split into four broad groups: Geometric, Functional, Technical and Pre-Series.

All four types of prototype are used in the product development process. However, whereas the ability to create Geometric and Functional prototypes has developed dramatically over the last few years, the same cannot be said of Technical prototypes which are still made late on in the product development process. If these technical prototypes can be made more easily and much earlier in the design process, then product lead times and costs can be significantly reduced and final quality improved.

This programme will be improving the performance of 'Process Chains' leading to the manufacture of Technical prototypes using Rapid Prototyping methods. The reason for improving process chains is that although an individual process may be excellent, there are often many processes working in conjunction with each other which lead to the creation of a Technical prototype. As these processes form a chain, they will be reliant on the weakest link. Consequently, it is important to develop these processes as a chain and to tune them to each other for best effect.

As European manufacturing business is competing with businesses throughout the world, it is essential that we make every effort to reduce the lead time and costs of our products to help them compete in the marketplace. This project supports the EUCAR master plan.

The proposal will identify critical technologies which can directly impact the improvement of process chains that lead to the manufacture of Technical Prototypes. These processes and process chains will be analysed and developed, tuning the process chains. The approach will include the identification of appropriate components that are representative of key component groups. The component groups will be defined at the beginning of the project according to size, complexity and difficulty of manufacture.

The project addresses two main groups of components: Injection moulded plastic parts and sheet metal parts. The project will combine the use of new manufacturing processes with Rapid Prototyping techniques.
