Condition Monitoring is the act of collecting measurements from machinery that allow experts to diagnose the condition of that machinery before a fault develops that could compromise the operation of the machinery.
The VISION projects overall objective as defined in the project proposal was:
"The development of an intelligent, adaptive monitoring and diagnostic system which will analyse engineering data, specifically vibration spectra, in order to sustain a high level of equipment reliability".
A consortium of companies has worked closely together to achieve this objective, with the result that a new software product has been developed that will diagnose the condition of rotating machinery using a combination of "intelligent" computing methods. The software is implemented in a familiar Windows interface, and following commercialisation, will be able to provide remote diagnostics through such media as the Web, Internet, Intranet remote servers, or locally to a PC, or data collection system.
Through the use of test facilities, simulations, and real end user data, fault and healthy vibration readings have been collected in many different operating conditions. This data has been used to train the intelligent diagnostic engine to recognise different fault types from different machines. The result of this work is an intelligent diagnostic software package that has achieved 98.4% accuracy on previously unseen data.
The potential for such a system in industry is huge. One survey indicated that 84% of companies running a condition-monitoring program thought that the most difficult part of the program was analysing the data collected. Therefore an intelligent diagnostic system, that was accurate, and easy to use could be implemented within 84% of all companies buying condition-monitoring hardware, (a market estimated to be worth some $711 million per annum world-wide in 1999, and growing at an annual rate of 9%).
It can be shown that the VISION project has already achieved a good degree of technical success through the delivery of its objectives. It will be shown in the next 3-5 years, that this technical success will be converted to commercial success as the benefits of an intelligent, adaptive monitoring and diagnostic system are seen in the marketplace.
