Slow setting cationic bituminous emulsion for construction and maintenance of roads

Objectives and content
The very purpose of this research program is thus to create such a methodology for the development of slow-setting cationic emulsions and their use in the manufacturing of an extended range-of road paving materials. This methodology must cover the full range of all the influencing parameters, from the physical and chemical properties of binders to the characteristics of emulsions and their interaction with the physical and chemical properties of mineral aggregates during the mixing, laying and compaction of paving mixtures.
More specifically, the investigation will deal with all the different parameters which may impact on the use of slow-setting cationic bituminous emulsions in either wearing course formulations or base course formulations, for which a particular focus will be laid on the possibility to use local mineral aggregates or reclaimed materials.
Reaching these goals would lead to major innovations. Cold mixes of higher quality could-be produced with slow-setting cationic emulsions adapted to each type of aggegate. Similarly, present emulsification problems due to the chemical variability of bitumens and, more particularly, problems encountered with polymer modified bitumens, could be overcome with tailormade emulsifiers and emulsion formulations. Finally, the possibility to more systematically used local materials and/or reclaimed materials is likely to reduce significantly the cost of bituminous mixtures.
To achieve these two major goals, we have selected partners whose recognized experience and expertise covers all the different aspects of the problems to be solved. It is thus expected that this project will lead to a significant extension of cold techniques in road construction, which is highly desirable for technical, environmental and economical reasons.
Savings on energy is one of the major reasons for which cold paving techniques, which appeared later than the hot techniques, began to grow significantly in the fifties, when the appearance of emulsifiers made it possible to produce cationic emulsions. In addition, cold technologies offer a valid alternative to the ecological shortcomings of hot asphalt mixing plants. The strong participation of specialized road building companies in the project allows us to ascertain that the benefits and findings of this research could be converted into practical applications as soon as from the 1st year following the completion of the project.
