Plasma Treatment of Transparent Plastics for Improved Wear Resistance and UV Stability

Objetivo



The requirements of the automotive industry to reduce the
fuel consumption by using light weight materials and
improved aerodynamic design, demand the substitution of
glass by transparent plastics (polycarbonate). Due to the
poor stone impact and wear resistance as well as the lack
of chemical resistance a surface protection system for
these materials is required.

For outdoor applications it is moreover necessary to
implement an UV radiation absorbing layer (or substances)
in the mechanical protection, to avoid a detachment of
the coating, caused by the destruction of the first
monolayers of the plastic substrate.

Surface modification techniques like high rate reactive
sputtering and plasmapoly merisation will be the tools
to improve the properties of the plastic surface. Special
attention will be payed to economical aspects like high
deposition rate and the upscaling to an industrial scale.
To get as much information about the deposition process
as well as about the performance of the coated
substrates, advanced analytical methodes (ToFSIMS, SIMS,
AUGER, XPS...) and standard testing methodes operated
with in the automotive industry (taber abraser, XE
weather o meter...) will be used.

The consortium comprises two supplier companies for
automotive industry (Bosch / Hella), with experience in
plasmapolymerisation as an production process
(reflectors) and three car manufacturer companies of
three different European countries (Fiat, Volvo, Mercedes
Benz). Moreover parts of two industrial research
laboratories (CE.TE.V and Daimler Benz), both with many
years experience on the field of surface technology and
thin film techniques will provide there knowledge to meet
the objectives of this program.
