Ziel
The first technical objective of the RECYTUBE project os
to develop a flexible and integrated technology able to
clean and sort end-of-life Cathode Ray Tube glass, in
order to produce economically a high-quality Secondary
Raw Material suitable for recycling.
The second technical objective of the project is then to
validate the feasibility of the closed-loop recycling
(i.e. producing new Cathode Ray Tube glass) and open-loop
recycling (i.e. producing other glass or ceramic
products) of this Secondary Raw Material.
Indeed, today more and more end-of-life electronic goods
are dismantled, partly for the recovery of valuable
materials, and partly for the proper elimination of toxic
components. But, while recycling techniques and outlets
for the metals, the plastics, and the electronic
components exist already, the Cathode Ray Tube glass
remains an unsolved problem. This is due to the fact that
most of the recycling routes demand very tight material
specifications whereas the composition of Cathode Ray
Tubes glass is both non uniform and very special.
As a consequence, even when a television set or a monitor
is dismantled, the Cathode Ray Tube is disposed of in
landfills because it cannot be recycled. Indeed, the
amount of glass from end-of-life Cathode Ray Tube in
western Europe is today in the range of 300 ktons/year
and it appears that 99% of this glass still ends up in
landfills where it can pollute the environment whereas it
could be reused saving energy, raw materials and landfill
spaces.
The integrated approach of the RECYTUBE project for the
development of end-of-life Cathode Ray Tube recycling
will allow the partners to fulfil the following
industrial objectives:
* To reduce by 80% within 3 years and 100% within 5
years the amount of end-of- life Cathode Ray Tube glass
disposed of in landfills thus saving space and
protecting the environment,
* to reduce bu at least 50% the overall disposal cost
of end-of-life electronic goods
containing Cathode Ray Tube by allowing its
recycling in a way economically
viable and safe to the environment,
* to increase from an average of 33% to an average of
95% in weight the amount of material which will be
recyclable in end-of-life electronic goods containing
Cathode Ray Tube (TVs. computer monitors),
* to reuse in the Cathode Ray Tube glass making
process (closed-loop recycling)
a fraction of the end-of-life Cathode Ray Tube glass
representing about 50%
(within 5 years) of the process feed for funnel
glass production whereas it is 0%
today,
* to reuse the remaining fraction of the end-of-life
Cathode Ray Tube glass in
other glass and ceramic industries (open-loop
recycling) which will thus find a
reliable and valuable raw material.
* to reduce by about 10% the virgin raw materials and
the energy usage needed
for the manufacturing of both Cathode Ray Tubes and
other glass and ceramic
products.
