Obiettivo
Cast ceramic items are particularly fragile before they
have been ftred and are notoriously brittle when they
have been fired. These factors lead to very high (up to
15%) losses during production and to a rather heavy
finished product with many restrictions on design. The
objective of this project will be to develop a fibre that
when added to ceramic bodies in small quantities will
inhibit the growth of cracks in both the unfired and
fired conditions. This will help to reduce production
losses, reduce the consumption of energy and materials
and allow greater freedom of design. Each of these
factors will assist the European ceramics industry in
meeting competition from other parts of the world.
A consortium of seven companies, and two subcontractors,
from six European countries has been assembled, including
a major industrial supplier of fibres, some ceramics
manufacturers and a University Department specialising in
advanced fibre technology.
The first half of this four year project will be devoted
mainly to the development and evaluation of fibre
materials and production processes. Earlier study of the
mechanisms for fracture in ceramic materials has provided
a definition of the properties required for these fibres
and has identified an extensive range of characterisation
techniques both for the fibres and for ceramic bodies
stengthened by the fibres. Major challenges will be to
produce fibres of rather small diameter from materials
compatible with both the ceramic matrix and the
manufacturing processes casting, drying and firing).
Potential fibre technologies developed in the laboratory
will then be evaluated by the industrial partners through
pilot and demonstration trials. Care will be taken, in
light of recent concern over health and safety matters
realating to fibres, to ensure that no environmental,
health or safety problems are introduced at any stage.
Measures will be taken to ensure that the technology
arising from this project is fully protected and
exploited by members of the consortium.
