A toolbox for optimal partitioning of electrical and electronic systems

Obiettivo



The value of the electric/electronic systems on a
modern vehicle amounts to approximately 10% of the total
cost (i.c. about 2000 MECU per year out of 20000 MECU per
year for the 14 million cars produced in Europe). This
figure will increase in d c future, due to the
introduction of new functionalities into the vehicle,
adding further compbxity to the systems. Current CAD CAE
EDA markets offers a very broad range of specialized
tools but integrated environments allowing in an casy and
interactive way
- The description of the electric and electronic
functionalities of the vehicle
- The quick architectural configuration (i.e. the
logical and topological allocation of the intelligence of
the system)
- The description of the interconnections (wire harness)
and their 3D routing (taking in account the physical
constraints of the vehicle)
- The evaluation of performance and cost of the system
are still missing

The aim of this project is the development of a method
with the related sw framewark, able to manage in an
integrated way the previously mentioned steps for the
design of complex on board electric/electronic systems.
The project will not consider the lower levd phases of
detailed specification and validation of the "intelligent
elements" (and their interaction with the boundary
dements) defined during the architectural configuration
phase.
The integrated environment will be based, as far as
possible, on commercially available tools (with additions
to cope with the project aims):
Mentor Graphics: System Design Station SDS; allows
designers to describe data flow, behavior and control
description Design Architect DA; schematic tool for
dectronics system block description. Logical Cable LC;
schematic tool for wire and cabling design.
SanGiorgio: ICAD System; object based programming
environment, using a Imowledge based approach, allows the
development of customisable applications

The expected main industrial benefits are:
Enforcement of the codesign paradigm between vehicle
manufacturers and suppliers. Acceleration of the
definition and evaluation process of on board
electric/electronic systems
Optimization of the logical and interconnection
architectures
Improvement of workflow management, design data
management and exchange between vehicb manufacturers and
suppliers
It is expected that design cycle will be shortened by
about 40% while the product development cost will
decrease by about 5%.

Other industry sectors outside automotive will benefit
from the results of the project as the final integrated
framework will be, kept as general purpose as possible
to cope with different application needs.

The consortium includes: vehiclc manufacturers (E:IAT,
PSA) automotive supplier (Magneti Marelli, Siemens,
Sylea, Bertin) CAD EDA developers/suppliers (Mentor
Graphics, SanGiorgio)
