Development of metal oxyde nanophase catalysts for emission control

Obiettivo

This project aims at developing new catalytic materials
for environmental applications and in particular in the
area of gas cleanup at moderate and high temperatures.
Industrial areas of such applications of significant
importance include mainly Three Way Catalysts (TWCs) for
the automotive industry which currently employ
exclusively catalytic systems based on expensive, noble
metals (Pt, Rh, Pd) and catalysts for combustion and
incineration plants.

The project focuses on two particular aspects of
environmental catalysis: hydrocarbons (HCs) removal
during the car engine's cold start phases and NOx
emissions reduction (a common problem of autoexhaust and
combustion applications). Materials based on cerium
oxide, which act as promoters of the catalytic activity
of noble metals can be an answer to the NOx emissions
problem. On the other hand, the problem of cold start
emissions is at present, tackled with the concept of the
preheating of a metallic procatalyst assembly by the
passage of electric current (Three Way Electrically
Heated Catalyst TWEHC).

Thus the main objectives of the project are:
- the synthesis via novel chemical routes of nanophase
mixed oxide catalytic materials with tailored properties,
which will be suitable for motor vehicle emissions
control as well as for high temperature gas clean up
applications
- the development of Three Way Electrically Heated
Catalysts based on perovskite materials, which will be
capable of achieving substantially reduced HCs emissions
during the cold start phases of an automobile catalyst.
Specific sub goals of the project will be:
- the improvement of the thermomechanical properties of
the catalytic supports, in order to make them appropriate
for high temperature applications
- the increase in chemical and thermal stability of new
catalysts and the evaluation of their catalytic
properties
- the study of washcoat noble metal interaction with
the aim of substantial reduction of precious metal
content
- the establishment of correlations between
structure/surface properties and catalyst performance.

The project structure follows the basic route of
constructing a catalytic system: the preparation of the
active phases, the mprovement of porous support
thermomechanical properties, the deposition of the active
phases on the support and the properties evaluation of
the catalytic system.
