Ziel
This proposal fits into the framework sketched by the ad hoc working group, within BRITE/EURAM, that created the CEDAM (Concurrently Engineered Design Approach of Machine Tools) approach to machine tool manufacturing in Europe. CEDAM advocates the development of multi functional, modularly structured and easily reconfigurable machines, as an answer to the Japanese dominance in the machine tool sector . The aim of MOTION is the development of an intelligent direct drive motion unit for machine tools with integrated axis control and intermodule interface, using linear motor and roller guide ways technology. Indeed, from previous CEDAM guided projects, like MAREA and KERNEL, it turned out that direct drive motion control units, based on linear motor technology has tremendous potential for application in machine tools. The modularity, as well in hardware as in control and software, can easily be accomplished with linear motor technology and it provides more flexibility and easy adaptation to customer needs. The modules must be of the plug and play type, which means that they must contain a local axis controller, monitoring and diagnostic functions, and provisions to hook up the module to an interconnection bus for interaction with other modules for multi axis motion synchronisation purposes.
The main innovations claimed are:
the modules built with linear motor together with the modular motion unit controller will make tracking accuracy of 5mm at speeds higher than 2m/sec and accelerations of lg, accessible to all European machine tool builders;
a modular motion control architecture enabling a modular machine construction methodology;
an affordable communication between distributed systems, focusing on axes synchronisation within 1msec;
linear motor concept for contouring applications, to integrate easily inside a mechanical frame;
implementation of cogging compensation techniques, in order to achieve a factor of 10 in contouring accuracy. A demonstrator machine tool will be built to demonstrate the performances of the axis modules and the controller .
The MOTION project adresses the following Brite/Euram objectives: 1.1.7.M 1.1.5.M and 1.4.2.M.
The consortium of MOTION is willing to participate in the TEAMS Thematic Network.. The consortium comprises an equilibrated mix of manufacturers of components to be used in the motion modules (Philips CFT for linear motors and controllers, Schneeberger for axis modules, ETEL for linear motors), of machine tool manufacturers and hence end users of the project outcome (FIDIA, manufacturer of NCs and high speed milling machines; SMT, manufacturer of lathes for non
symmetrical parts) and of research institutes with broad experience in the field of motion control (K.U.Leuven for motion controllers, control algorithms and linear motor modelling; KTH for motion controllers).
The overall resulting savings for the machine tool builders are 5% of the total machine tool cost. The most important gain however, are the users' direct (reduction of process time of the part due to the high performances of the axis and better accuracy of final part) and indirect benefits (machine reconfiguration capability and higher reliability).
