Automotive glazing

Objectif

Automotive glazing plays a critical role in the development of the 2000 years car. Following the strategic guidelines of the EUCAR Master Plan, clearly automotive glazing has to fulfil new performances that will directly impact on:
safety: visibility, passenger protection, car handling and thermal, acoustic driving comfort;
environmental sustainability, recyclability and fuel consumption (weight reduction and aerodynamic shapes)
maintenance cost: windscreen fractures decrease, new assembling systems.
The main objectives of this project are:
to identify the new possible solutions of glazing for increasing safety & recyclability, reducing weight (up to 30%), improving thermal & acoustic comfort (EUCAR MP strategic objectives: improved quality, reliability & comfort; reduction in fuel consumption, increased recyclability),
to find out common methodologies for glazing characterization between car and glazing manufacturers to create a common data base, especially for developing new glazing solutions (EUCAR MP stratogic objective: reduce material cost).
to optimize the glazing choice by a better understanding of
possible conflict between glazing features(EUCAR MP strategic objective: improved quality reliability & comfort);
to test optimized solutions for glazing on case study cars that will allow to validate the new methodologies and the benefits obtained by the optimization of glazing parameters (new solution demonstrators).
Several methods of glazing characterization are present in the state of the art and most of them are of common use between car and glass manufacturers (especially those addressed to law requirements). However, in some specific fields very little work is available. No attempt has been made to optimize the glazing for all its performances and to understand the minimum technological content to secure the driving safety.
The basic activities required to develop new guidelines for new glazing products for vehicles are as follows:
functional requirements for glazing solutions: selection of case studies and identification of their priorities, definition of glazing performance constraints and common measurement methods;
development of new characterization methodologies able to
overcome the principal deficiencies of the current methods regarding the new aspect related to new customer requirements, shape complexity, weight reduction, safety and recycling. Simultaneous engineering of glazing oriented to identify the best solutions for a specific vehicle design;
testing and evaluation of demonstrators for relevant case
studies.
The consortium comprises car manufacturers (CRFiat, Renault, Rover) as end users, automotive glass producers (Pilkington, PPG, Saint Gobain, Splintex) as suppliers and special department of Universities (Loughbourogh and WarwicK) for the development of mechanical, thermal comfort, environmental methodologies.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
