Improved ship design for marine safety: extreme loads effects and h ydroelastic coupling

Obiettivo

Objectives and content
European Marine Industries are now strongly concerned by
integrated ship design including safety assessment
(industry priority in Maritime Industry R&D Master Plan
as well as in Task Force Maritime Systems of the Future).
For the extreme accidental hydrodynamic loading and
associated hydroelastic response, there is a strong need
for reliable prediction tools/methodologies.
The industrial research effort in SEAWORTH is aimed to
develop analyses and design tools that are now necessary
to produce new ships (competitive engineering) satisfying
the most stringent safety and environmental regulations
and the most demanding of markets (inside Europe in short
sea shipping, and outside Europe for South East Asia).
This will benefit to the European Maritime Industries,
which will increase their capabilities to produce and
operate ships at the right safety level.
In the present project, industrial design scenarios will
be defined by partners end-users and a Classification
Society for four types of ship (task 1). To address the
problem of extreme hydrodynamic loads (local slamming
impacts loads, global hydroelastic response), there will
be numerical analyses with existing software
(hydrodynamics, structural analyses and hydroelastic
coupling with finite element and finite difference
methods) and experimental tests (seakeeping in model
basin and water impact tests on bow shapes), with
particular concern on fluid-structure interactions (tasks
2 and 3). A database of these results will be built and
integrated within an expert system structure open to
other types of ship (task 4). For practical purposes of
design work, a predictional methodology for extreme loads
will be derived from these basic analyses, through
deterministic and statistical approaches (task 5). The
final step of the project (task 6) will apply previous
results to the design work of four reference ships, with
involvement of industrial end-users and a Classification
Society. Prenormative guidelines will be formulated with
involvement of a Classification Society.
