Shipbuilding Laser Welds: an integrated system for Assurance and Co ntrol of Quality

Obiettivo

Objectives and content
The main strategic aim of the research is to contribute
to the recovery of the competitiveness of the European
shipbuilding industry, making it possible the industrial
use of the laser welding technology in the construction
of ship structures. The potential benefits are expected
from an increase in productivity and, of even more
importance, in quality and accuracy of the laser welded
structures.
The project is aimed to give the necessary confidence on
the laser welding process to the Shipbuilders and the
Classification Societies, by the development of an
integrated Quality assurance/Control system to be used in
laser welding plants. The research will also focus on a
systematic study on the influence of steel composition
and welding parameters on the quality of the laser welds,
and on the study of acceptance criteria for weld defects
in laser welded ship structures, based on a "fitness for
purpose approach". It is expected that this part of the
research will contribute to the improvement/extension of
the Guidelines for the approval of CO2-Laser Welding
recently issued by the European Classification Societies.
In order to be able to accomplish the research aims and
realise a prompt and effective exploitation of the
results, the project Partnership has been set up matching
the expertise of:
Technological partners:
FORCE INSTITUTE: with its skill in Production
Technology, Material Technology, Inspection and Testing,
Energy and Metrology, Sensor Technology,
CSM: with its skill in the material small and full
scale testing, in the data elaboration for metallurgical
interpretation and theoretical evaluation and prediction,
ALFA LASERTECHNIK: with its particular skill in
Emission light analyser system.
End-users: two major European shipyards: ODENSE
Steelshipyard Ltd. and FINCANTIERI - Cantieri Navali
Italiani, that are particularly committed in the
exploitation of laser welding technology, having under
completion prototype plants for butt and fillet welding
of ship structure parts.
Classification Societies: with reference to the
exploitation phase, for the future extension of the
Guidelines, an important and co-ordinated representative
of the European Classification Societies is involved in
the project- LLOYD'S REGISTER and RINA-.
