New photoselective processes for flat panel fluorescent displays

Obiettivo

Objectives and content
Objectives
The project aims to generate the basic materials and
technologies that will lead to a new type of flat panel
liquid crystal display. This type of display will have
an exceptionally large viewing angle without contrast or
colour deformation (close to +/-90 horizontally and
vertically) and an improved brightness/power consumption
ratio (a factor of 3 or more better than the present
LCD's). The project also aims to demonstrate the
functionality of these materials and processes in a
simple demonstrator display performing these properties.
The new display is an UV backlit system that produces
pixelated colours in an additive way without the
ineffective absorption of large parts of the visible
spectrum. Its principle is based on polarisation
selective photoluminescent materials processed by
technologies that can be used in-cell, close to the UV
switch. The actual light emission and angular
distribution will be in the light path after the optical
switch. By applying this technique light absorption, as
in conventional LCD's, is avoided and consequently the
on-the-screen brightness is drastically improved.
Furthermore the viewing angle problems that occur with
LCD's are absent, the display does not suffer from
parallax which lead to information screens with improved
resolution. The result will be a display with the
advantages of liquid crystal displays such as low-weight,
thin, flat, multiplexed addressing, etc., however with
the luminance and viewing angle performance of a CRT
display.
Approach
In order to realise the new display, new materials and
new technologies need to be developed:
New organic and polymeric materials will be developed
which combine high photoluminescence efficiencies with
the ability to be aligned by lithographic techniques.
New photo-alignment methods based on photo-selection
and/or photo-command surfaces will be investigated for
both the dye alignment and liquid crystal alignment in
the electro-optical switches.
New electro-optical switches will be developed
combining an efficient and fast switching of UV light
with a sufficient resistance against UV degradation.
In addition, the total composite of luminescent pixel
elements and UV switch needs to be manufactured
translating the various chemical and physical findings
into a general display technology.
Exploitation:
First of all, the project has a great strategic
importance and an innovative character, which will emerge
new industrial activities in the chemical and the
electronics industry. An important assignment of the
project consortium is to generate basic patents in the
field to establish a strong base position for the
European industry. The industrial participation of a
manufacturer of fine chemicals and specialised in display
materials and a manufacturer of display and display
components indicates the industrial relevance of the
project. Moreover, the involvement of these partners
will accelerate the industrial exploitation of the
results.
It is planned that the manufacturer of fine chemicals
will exploit the project results as the basic materials
supplier. Here, the results of some individual tasks
within the project might be beneficial in themselves
because they meet existing desires in the displays
industry, such as new photo-alignment layers. The
display manufacturer will exploit the devices generated
by the project. Also here the exploitation possibilities
are wider than those of the project objectives alone,
because they meet for instance also desires within the
lighting industry.
Partners:
The project brings together multi-disciplinary
technologies and research groups and institutes from
different origin, both from scientific as from
nationalities point of view. For the project a
consortium is brought together comprising academic
experts in dye and polymer synthesis, photo-physics and
photochemistry and device physics and polymer technology.
These partners will be involved mainly in the fundamental
research part of this project. In addition, the
participating companies bring industrial expertise on
organic and display materials and on display
manufacturing technology into the project. It is also
the role of the industrial partners to bring existing
materials and technologies into the project to enhance
the success chances.
Time frame:
Although the field in which the research will be
performed is aggressive and rapidly moving, the type of
research as proposed is considered to be a real leap
ahead in display technology and therefore of a
fundamental and long term character. At the end of the
currently proposed three-year project the principles will
have been demonstrated and new projects might emerge
which will lead to the development and industrialisation
the new displays dedicated to the field of application in
which they are planned to be used.
