Electromagnetic Compatibility simulation for Automotive Applications

Ziel

Objectives and content
Development and validation of integration methods, CAD
interfaces, simulation tools & standards for
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) predictive automotive
electronic simulation. The simulation will allow EMC
design early in the design cycle instead of the current
test verification after product completion.
Background:
Industrial: In the car industry, the usage of electronics
in vehicles has increased at a phenomenal rate in the
last decade, and will continue to do so, for example to
enhance automatisation, driver comfort and vehicle
safety. The electronics and harness are already the most
expensive car component. Electric and electronic
components and systems must comply with increasingly
tougher EEC's EMC regulations. They must resist hostile
environments and show reduced emissions. Currently,
nearly 100% of the EMC work is done by experimental
verification with $10M equipment, much too late in the
design cycle to allow adequate design.
Scientific: Methods and tools are available from
research, but they are not adapted, complete, validated
and integrated for automotive applications. The tools
can be divided into four main complementary categories:
CAD, 3D, Harness, Circuit.
Approach:
Starting from typical EMC design problems like antenna,
harness, and PCB, new Methods, CAD links, Tools and
Standards are developed and validated:
Complementation and validation of the tools for missing
critical automotive functionalities,
Definition, implementation and validation of standard
communication libraries and utilities for the integration
of the various categories of tools, allowing plug and
play, by using in house or commercial codes,
Evaluation & adaptation of CAD cleaning approaches for
efficient CAD to mesh interfaces,
Implementation of specific automotive simulation
methods, for example: Definition of synthetic wiring
bundles, or terminal loads characteristics of a supplier,
Simulation of a harness design without knowing the exact
position of the wires, Antenna design approaches etc.
Scientific and Industrial validation of the methods and
tools,
Evaluation and enhancement of test set up, equipment
and procedures on component and full car tests
(Striplines, Tem cells, Anechoic chambers),
Contribution to standardisation, i.e. for
specifications of Synthetic wiring bundles and Terminal
loads, from a supplier, Communication libraries and
files, Test set up, equipment and procedures.
Innovation:
Leap from a car design verification approach based on
tests at the product completion, towards a simulation
based design at the early stage of conception.
