Objective
Objectives and content
Main engine manufacturing and aircraft's companies have
accumulated a deep knowledge of engine behaviours during
their lifetime. Accurate models are also available. It
has long been stated that Engine Condition Monitoring
systems and Auto Adaptive Control Systems could provide
significant savings in commercial aviation. Despite of
these perspectives, practical applications gave poor
results. A clear status of these applications, including
airliners viewpoint, and the review in a more general
framework appear to be essential for further developments
evaluation.
Today, available systems are based on simplified
thermodynamical stationary models and running on ground
computers. We believe that more complex dynamical and
non-linear models running on small on-board computers
will be able to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and
monitoring systems.
Recent advances in Control Theory and Fault Diagnosis
Techniques, and the availability of growing computer
resources at low cost, indicate that such systems could
be greatly improved in reliability and accuracy for
engine diagnostic. Prognostication potential could
therefore be increase. Nevertheless, application to Gas
Turbine Engines is a particular problem, which still
needs to be correctly posed. Instrumentation to be used
required modelling efforts and data processing are
important points to be evaluated in order to use
automated systems at an industrial scale.
The present project involves several leading European
experts in Control and Diagnosis and main aerospace
propulsion industries. The main objective is to define
the principles for a new generation of electronical
controllers and data management systems in order to
increase both reliability and performances of power
generation systems.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
