Damage Assessment in Smart Composite Materials

Obiettivo

Objectives and content
DAMASCOS conducts research in damage and ageing
assessment for large area composite structures to enable
a since interrogation procedure to evaluate structural
areas of many square metres. Such techniques could
revolutionise integrity monitoring in composites. The
project will address in-plane propagation of ultrasonic
waves complemented by new spatially integrating
ultrasonic detection schemes coupled to advanced
signature recognition software. The research will
comprise super computer based simulations and
experimental assessment in real structures.
Damage assessment in composites invariably uses point
source: point detector configurations limiting
interrogation to a linear path. Wide area scanning
involves multiple point to point interrogation sequences.
Present signal analysis approaches this configuration.
Consequently damage assessment is a long, expensive
process. The same applies to visual inspection
procedures, x-ray, and similar probes. Current
ultrasonic probes focus on imaging at high frequencies
where the attenuation in composites is high, limiting
range to a fraction of a metre.
DAMASCOS integrates relatively low frequency (100-500kHz)
insonification with piezoelectric and/or optical fibre
integrating detectors, with signal processing designed to
identify damage induced scattering signatures (rather
than diffraction limited imaging) and interpret damage or
ageing thresholds. This project comprises high-risk
technical activities incorporating substantial innovation
and significant potential for long term exploitation.
The principal risks include the data inversion procedures
for material properties and damage thresholds, the long
propagation distances to address wide areas and signal
retrieval therein and the derivation of realistic
simulations to characterise real damage. The innovative
features include applying novel simulation and modelling
systems based upon parallel processors; multiple
excitation and/or multiple or integrating detection
systems and the application of advanced signal processing
such as novelty indices and multivariate statistics.
This integrated approach promises at least a fivefold
reduction in inspection costs compared to methods
currently in research and development.
The partnership, five internationally recognised
university teams in three different European countries
with two industrial partners providing applications
analysis and sample fabrication, is pan European to
address this complex multi-disciplinary problem.
DAMASCOS enables monitoring damage and ageing in
aerospace, in mass transportation and in composite civil
engineering structures, realising streamlined lower cost
safety verification. Instrument suppliers addressing
world-wide markets from a, typically, SME base will
stimulate manufacturing. Social contributions lie in
enhanced public safety and improved confidence in major
transportation and infrastructure investments. DAMASCOS
promises to contribute to pan European international
standards as a preferred test technique Exploitation will
be through patent protection and relationships with
potential system manufacturers nurtured during the
programme. Ground breaking research results will feature
strongly in national and international conferences
professional journals and trade publications.
