Objectives and content
The environmental impact and economical aspects of
aircraft and industrial gas turbines require the
development of gas turbines with increased efficiency and
reduced trace gas emissions. New aero gas turbines must
be shown to meet the environmental requirements laid down
by international regulatory bodies, while industrial gas
turbines must meet requirements specified in the area
where they would operate. Less expensive methods than
the currently used one for measurements at the final
product are required to allow gas turbine manufacturers
to perform emission measurements during the whole
development cycle of a new product for studies of the
effects of design parameters on the exhaust composition.
Non-intrusive measurements have the potential to overcome
the disadvantages of gas sampling techniques currently
used. This proposal is based on the results of a current
project "NON-INTRUSIVE MEASUREMENTS OF AIRCRAFT EXHAUST
EMISSIONS (AEROJET)", BRPR-CT96-0142 in which different
non-intrusive demonstrator devices for measurements of
gas species and temperature are tested. These techniques
are based on FTIR (temperature, CO2, H2O, CO, NO, NO2,
UHC), narrow-band infrared spectroscopy (temperature,
CO2, CO), and laser analysis of particulates. The
objective of AEROJET 2 is to prototype the most
appropriate instruments/techniques identified in AEROJET
for different European end-users. AEROJET 2 is an
industrial research activity, which will provide a nonintrusive analysis capability with an accuracy comparable
or better than the currently used intrusive methods.
The time for developing a prototype system for this
industrial research programme is estimated to be 18
months. The time for testing the system by measurements
of different turbines on different rigs accounts for
additional 18 months. These activities include
developments of both, hardware and software. In the
second part of the project extensive tests of the
prototypes on test rigs with different running gas
turbines are planned. The prototype development shall be
guided by an evaluation, verification, and validation
process for all gases specified and temperature,
including any potential interfering effects of one
species upon another. The consortium includes developer,
manufacturer and end-user, which will take in charge the
engine test runs in test rigs and ground testing on
installed engines at aircrafts.
