New structural alternative for modules in machinery

Risultati finali

The main objective of the project is to study a new technique for the construction of conventional machine structural elements that makes tangible use of light structures. This solution results in saving resources of material and time and in a decrease of the final cost of the machine. This technique is based on using a reticule of truss elements linked through screwed spherical knots, nowadays used in architectural and civil engineering fields, or through welded joints. During the project two different type of joints have been analysed, screwed and welded joints. Both of them are only tangible when the main efforts of the structural modules are axial efforts. Once this first requirement is fulfilled, the choice of a screwed or welded joint depends on the geometrical characteristics of the modules and their restrictions and requirements imposed. In general, when the overall dimensions are higher than 450mm and the restrictions are not too severe, screwed joints will be selected. Nowadays, there are several types of screwed joints used in architecture field. By means of static and dynamic tests it has been analysed whether they are suitable to be used in machinery or not. As a result, several connection systems have been proposed and some of them are new designs that have been patented. After comparing the experimental tests with the theoretical calculations, good FE-model have been designed, which allow defining reliable theoretical models.

The processing assistant tool allows automating the design of structural parts based on bars and nodes, finding the optimum configuration of nodes and bars for the inputted restrictions (structural behaviour, position of components, sizes, free places) and finding the maximum reliability of static and dynamic predictions of assembled machine tools based on theoretical FE-models of the individual machine components. The architecture establishes the bases of the architecture for doing, afterwards out of the project, the complete software tool. The architecture includes all the aspects related with design, calculus, evaluation of different structural alternatives, dynamic coupling techniques and construction and assembly of basic components.
