Superconducting power link

Ziel

Objectives and content:

Deregulation is the new key word which will change the structure of power transmission and distribution in Europe. The growing competition will result the shut down of non efficient and expensive power generation plants and systems. The whole power system will have to operate closer to the upper limit but will make it more sensitive against perturbations and short circuits. Effective fault current limiting devices will become necessary in such power systems. SUPERPOLI offers the opportunity for low loss power transmission of high nominal currents and current limitation simultaneously in one single device. The link will be built up from super conducting tubular modules joined by a low resistance flexible connection. The tubular cooling system using liquid nitrogen will be placed inside the tubular conductors and will be introduced in a stainless steel envelope containing a thermal vacuum insulation and a separate electrical insulation. Such a link will find its application as a generator out-line or in the medium voltage power distribution grid. Aim of the proposed project is the conductors development and the realisation of a one phase functional model of length 2 m for 20 kV and 2 kA operation.

The project goal can not be achieved on the basis of the high temperature superconductors (HTS) available today. Silver based HTS tapes are not suitable for fault current limitation because of their low resistivity silver matrix. The objective, a low ac loss conductor of the required dimensions suitable for current limitation, can only be reached by new conductor type: either a composite Bi-2212 conductor with moderate Jc can be worked out in a sandwich like structure; or a coated Y-123 conductor with a very high Jc value can be achieved in longlengths. The main benefit of the SUPERPOLI concept is related to the fault current limitation: when the current rises, the super conducting link becomes resistive and the over currents are reduced to a predetermined value. System components for power transmission are today designed for severe fault conditions (over currents, heating and electro-magnetic forces). Current limitation will significantly reduce maximum rating requirements thereby allowing substantial saving: up to 30 % for high cost equipment including generators representing 200 MECU and will further improve the safety of the system.

An additional advantage concerns the low loss transmission of high nominal currents: the total room temperature losses for the SUPERPOLI system represent only 1/7 of the ac losses in classical three phases bar systems. This results in energy savings of ~ 260 kECU per year. As the cross sectional dimension of SUPERPOLI will be approximately 4 times smaller than in classical power links the civil engineering costs can also be reduced. Furthermore the mode sign will strongly reduce the leakage of electromagnetic fields. The main outputs of this project will be optimised tubular composite Bi-2212 and coatedY-123conductors of 1 m length, a 2 m functional power link model, its test results and the evaluation of possibilities for power management in the distribution grid. The consortium comprises three industrial partners with three different fields of activities. They combine the experience of a specialist in the chemistry of superconducting materials, a company which is skilled in power engineering, cables manufacturing and super conducting systems and a potential end user for a SUPERPOLI system, an electrical utility company. Two university partners bring in their expertise in material science and superconductivity as well as in high precision measurements techniques and electrical engineering. BE97-4738
