Innovative magnetic and optical sensors using advanced material for non destructive testing applications

Obiettivo



The main industrial objectives of this research programme are applications of new NDT technologies more cost effective, faster, working under operating conditions using non-contact sensing techniques; or offering more comprehensive analysis and characterisation of defects in materials (type, size, position) using imaging system; or using multisensor fusion. The work proposed addresses the areas 214 m, 141 s, 232 s and 123 s of the IMT workprogramme. The main technical objectives of this research programme are to design innovative NDT sensors and equipments by introducing new functionalised material like for example magnetostrictive piezoceramic and magnetoelastic material answering the industrial need of non contacting and multisensor fusion technologies; and also by introducing new applications of imaging tools for multitest technologies. The main technical achievement expected from this project will be: a) Design a novel very low cost one dimensional magnetic fibre sensor to detect surface defect with an active sense length of about 200 mm (optimistically) or of 50 mm realistically. b) Provide an innovative portable non-contact ultrasonic probe capable of performing inspection in industrial measurements. It will use a laser source for ultrasound generation, adapted to a delivery system that integrates with a sensor receiver. In the first instance, the non-contact receiver will consist of an new EMAT or air coupled composite transducer capable of responding to ultrasound in the 5 MHz range.; c) Design a new generation of multitechnique NDT sensor for surface and deep defect detection in a single measurement head taking the economic advantage to operate with a single scam. d) Design a modular and portable prototype multitest instrument. Each module is designed to perform a specific function ("Mdl" or ultrasonic measurement) and built to run in a standard PC with basic software package to drive the sensors including acquisition display and storage of the data. e) Develop data acquisition and imaging processing system for the multitechnique sensor. The Processing Module dedicated to graphic user interface will be developed under Windows environment. f) Develop a prototype test system to detect surface and under surface cracks on large details with rotational symmetry on the basis of the fibre sensor for low cost on line monitoring and final quality controling traditional industrial sector (automotive and steel industry). It is expected to make the designed test system sufficiently reliable and user friendly to work in a production environment. g) Demonstration trials for selected in service and production line applications will be made in order to establish the viability of the developed systems and the results will be compared with those obtained by equivalent traditional techniques. Time scale to market Since the project will generate applications targeted results, validated by full scale tests, this new NOT equipment could be introduced into production lines and in service inspection within 3 to 4 years maximum after the end of the project but earlier implementation will to be achieved on selected applications using only the surface sensor or only the ultrasonic sensor version (2 years seem a realistic objective).
