Dynamically loaded filament wound composite parts tailored for hot and wet environments

Obiettivo

One of the most challenging tasks of composite design is to predict durability. This means that composite structures must be designed to maintain strength and stiffness throughout their service life in order to prevent excessive maintenance, repair or modification costs. However, due to the lack of proper models and experimental data, the designer is often faced with an impossible task. This is a controlling feature for the general use of modern engineering composites which leads, many times, to uneconomical structures. The industrial objective of this project is to construct proper tools to design dynamically loaded filament wound composites which have adequate durability when subjected to high-cycle fatigue and/or hostile environments. This issue is of major importance for industry because filament winding provides a very inexpensive way to manufacture composite laminates. For example a modern paper machine uses many rolls subjected to high cycle fatigue. These components are often also subjected to environmental spectra including moisture, high temperatures and corrosive agents. In detail, the main industrial objectives can be achieved by the following developments: 1. New simulation models for estimating the lifetime of composite structures in hostile environments. 2. New production technologies to obtain structures with the pre-calculated, optimised laminate configuration as well as producing a void free material. 3. New quality control systems in order to ensure the structures are produced as near as possible to the optimum model. 4. New methods to obtain information concerning internal stresses present within a composite structure. 5. Innovative resin compositions having optimum long-term strength properties in hot and wet environments by application of new additives. 6. New protective moisture barrier coatings for filament wound structures. 7. Innovative process characterisation for new fibre and matrix materials including the measurement of fibre/matrix compatibility in cured laminates. The end result of this project will be an experimentally verified concept for production components with an ideal void-free, laminate composite structure which possess good durability in hot/wet environments. Upon completion of this project, sufficient technical data will exist for simulating fatigue behaviour of future composite structures. Another outcome of this project will be that the composite manufacturers will have the capability of independently controlling the various parameters during production that would be monitored by the newly developed quality control system.
