New high performance electro Rheological Fluids based on multilayered particles

Obiettivo

Objectives and content
Electro Rheological Fluids (ERFs) are suspensions of nonconductive, polarisable particles in a liquid medium,
which reversibly change their rheology under an
energising electrical field.
The objective of this project is to develop a new type of
ERFs with response times < 1 ms for high frequency (110
kHz) underwater acoustics applications and ERFs with
electrical losses < 200 W/l for white goods vibration
dampers and vehicle shock absorbers, working with high
shear rates and low energising voltage even at elevated
temperatures. Existing ERFs do not fulfil the demands of
these applications, since compromises have to be accepted
from trying to incorporate almost all required properties
into one and the same particle composition.
The technical innovation claimed in this proposal is the
development of spherical multi-layered dispersed
particles having an insulating core of adapted density
and size to control sedimentation, a metallic coating,
providing a high polarisation at relatively low voltages
for short response times and a top coating for electrical
insulation, tailored interfacial properties to liquids,
assuring the long-term dispersibility and stability. The
general approach for the material and process development
is the use of wet chemical routes for the synthesis and
processing of fine particles and stabilised suspensions,
based on the basic technologies for the preparation of
fine particles and a variety of functional coatings,
available at partner INM. INM has already made such
particles from commercially available hollow glass
spheres of 40 mm in diameter. A copper layer was
deposited electrolesson these particles and finally the
particles were coated with TiO2 or borosilicate glass
layers by spray drying and thermal treatment. Subsequent
testing of particle containing suspensions of silicon oil
has shown remarkable electrorheological effects. TMS SAS,
SUSPA and MONROE will further develop and apply testing
devices for the new ERFs, providing inputs for the
optimisation of the ERF by INM and LA. The project will
end up in demonstrator device development and testing by
TMS SAS, SUSPA and MONROE due to their specific
application requirements, based on a scaled up pilot
production technique (5 I) at partner LA, acting as the
future producer.
The results of the project will be used by TMS SAS, SUSPA
and MONROE to improve their own products and to
consolidate and increase the EC companies and global
market share. For the use of the results outside the
partnership an active policy of licensing and technology
transfer is planned.
Brite Euram areas are: 2.3. 2.1. 3.B6 and 3.B5 in the
fields of A10, B25, C39 and D25.
